WWII Veteran Joyce Gwendyl Paynter (nee Andrews) of Charlottetown, formally of French River, passed away peacefully with her family by her side at Whisperwood Villa, on Tuesday, July 30, 2019, at the age of 93. Loving mother of Gary (Doreen), Sandra (Rendle) Gauthier, Robert (Isabel) and Derrick (Jean). A devoted grandmother to Cynthia, Cheryl, Steven, Gregory, Christina, Brent, David and Jillian. Great grandmother of Cassandra, Ashley, Alyssa, Kylie, Karina and Lena. Sister of Donald Andrews (Joyce deceased). Predeceased by her husband, Arthur "Art" Elwood, brother and sister-in-law Ted Andrews (Betty), Ontario, sister Marjorie Kelly, England and her parents William and Ethel Andrews. Survived by brother-in-law Cyril Gray, Mississauga Ontario. Originally from Leicester, England, Joyce was a proud veteran and British war bride. She was a private in the Canadian Armed Forces, Canadian Women's Army Corps assigned to the 43rd company out of Canada's military headquarters in London during the Second World War. She married Arthur Paynter in 1943 while volunteering with the British Red Cross and without yet setting foot on Canadian soil enlisted with the Canadian Armed Forces. She came to PEI via the Ile de France troop ship through Pier 21 in Halifax in 1945. Art and Joyce settled in French River where they farmed and were lighthouse keepers of the Cape Tryon lighthouse until Art's health issues took them to Charlottetown. Art and Joyce worked as a houseparent team at the Sherwood Home until Art's passing in 1970. As a very young widow, Joyce devoted the remainder of her life to providing for her family and her community. She was a loyal and decorated member of The Royal Canadian Legion, being a member since 1962. She was a member of the Branch "Sick and Visiting Committee" for 12 years. An advocate for ex-service women, her efforts earned women the right to parade back to the Branch upon conclusion of the Remembrance Day ceremony and established a number of other firsts for female Veterans. Joyce became the first woman to serve as Honorary President of Branch No. 1 and of the Prince Edward Island Provincial Command. She has been associated with several community organizations, including the Poppy Campaign, Meals on Wheels, the Red Cross, 4-H, the Women's Institute, the Mentally and Physically Challenged and the Prince Edward Island Addiction Foundation, through which she helped form an Auxiliary for the Alcoholism Treatment Centre, Past President of the Women's Auxiliary for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, an Assistant Director of Local 19 of the Prince Edward Island Government Retirees, Founding member of Big Brothers on PEI and a member of the Seniors Active Living Centre. She received the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation medal in 2002 in honor of her contributions to the care and well-being of veterans and also for her own sacrifices as a veteran. Edward Pendergast RCN (veteran of the Second World War) of Charlottetown and formerly of Kensington, P.E.I. and Riverview, N.B. in his 86th year. Beloved husband of the late Donalda (nee MacDonald) Pendergast and dear father of John Pendergast of Halifax, N.S., Liz Pendergast (Paul Shaw) of Stratford, Donald Pendergast of Charlottetown and Katherine Pendegast (Donnie Arsenault) of Egmont Bay. He is also survived by five loving grandchildren Jared, Erin, Madeline, Emily and Robyn; brothers and sisters, Patricia Stanyer of Richmond, B.C., Austin (Ethel) Pendergast of Darnley, Tom (Sheilgh) Pendergast of North Bay, Ont., Eugene "Casey" Pendergast of Bedford, N.S., Frances (Tom) McSwiggan of Ottawa, Ont. and Fr. Life member of the Royal Canadian Legion and West Nova Scotia Regiment. Beloved husband of the late Vera Martin, and dear father of Brian (Cathie), Judy (Bernie) Totten, John (Cathy), Gordie (Rena), Joyce (Mike) Carmichael, and Paul (Jane). He is also survived by 19 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and son-in-law Brent Spencer. He was predeceased by his daughter Brenda Spencer.

Buddy was the beloved husband of Freda Marie (nee Gallant); father of Leroy Pineau and Donna Ward (Richard); stepfather of Edwin (Rose Marie), Ann (Remi), Della (Claude), Carol (Donald), Gary (Carolyn), Brian (Ann Marie), Valerie (John), Kevin (Wendy) and Len (Brent); grandfather of 25 and great-grandfather of 18. 

He was predeceased by his first wife, Marge; an infant daughter, Sally Jude; two sisters, Veronica and Leah; and his parents, Jack and Angelina (Buote) Pineau.

Buddy was a North Nova Scotia Highlander, a veteran of the Second World War and D-Day survivor.

Joseph was the father of Randy, Ronnie, Judy (Darcy), Wayne (Janice), Dale (Sandy) and Shelley (John); grandfather of Allen, Angela (Peter), James (Georgia), Jarod, Cassidy (Steve), Brad (Nathalie), Shelby, Sarah (Ryan), Kerri-Lynn (Matt), Rebecca (Dan), Theresa (John) and Mary; and great-grandfather of Amber, Breanna, William, Aiden, Cameron and Lily. He is also survived by his brother, Arthur (Pauline); sisters, Marie Doiron (Bernard, deceased) and Lillian Parkman (Ralph); sisters-in-law, Norma Gauthier (Herbie) and Germaine Buote (Doug, deceased); and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

March 1, 1951 – November 10, 2012

We celebrate the life of Lindy “Len” Merlin Plourd, age 61, which came to a peaceful end in the early morning of November 10, 2012, at the Prince Edward Palliative Care Unit in Charlottetown, P.E.I.
Len put up a valiant fight from injuries sustained many years ago while serving with the Royal Canadian Navy. On October 23, 1969, at 8:20 a.m., the HMCS Kootenay was in the North Atlantic when there was an engine room explosion and fire — nine seamen lost their lives, others were seriously injured, many with Len, trapped in the cafeteria full of thick black smoke and flames. The survivors suffered PTSD, as well as long- term physical and medical difficulties. Len was transferred to CFB Summerside, Slemon Park, to await a transfer to a different ship — around the same time his future wife Cora moved to the base. It was love at first sight — they met January 16, 1970, engaged February 7 before Len was transferred back to sea duty.
Len and Cora were married on December 19, 1970. In early 1971, Len was medically discharged from RCN and moved to his home town Lethbridge, Alberta. Len and Cora enjoyed their early married life and many friends in Lethbridge and then moved on to Cora’s home province Prince Edward Island in the summer of 1993. Len was an easygoing man with a great smile and laugh, always willing to help anyone in need. He was a terrific husband, supportive partner to his wife of 42 years, loyal friend and a committed pet “dad” to Niki, Freddie, and Sassy.
Left to treasure his memory are his wife Cora (Nicholson) Plourd; his brothers, Paul (Gail), Coalhurst, AB, Trevor (Carolyn), Lethbridge, AB; sister, Shelley (Conner), Calgary, AB; aunt, Ev Plourd (Victoria, B.C.). Len will be missed by in-laws Alan and Jan Nicholson (Regina, SK), Blair and Barb Nicholson (Ottawa, ON); Cynthia Nicholson, (Mt. Pearl, NF) and a host of nieces, nephews and grandnieces and nephews.
Len adopted P.E.I. as home including Nicholson relatives Dave and Paula and Ron and Mary Duchesne, Mrs. (J.P.) Grace Nicholson and their extended families. Also, the surviving crew members of the Kootenay, We Are as One.
Len was predeceased by his parents Paul Vincent and Haroldine (Sorensen) Plourd, Lethbridge, AB., and his parents-in-law Douglas and Maude (Smith) Nicholson of Rocky Point, PE.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Len can be made to The Cat Action Team P.E.I. or the P.E.I. Humane Society, or Lethbridge Animal Shelter.
